The Bonus Puzzle

Throughout the day, various things showed up without warning which were intended to stick in observant players' memories; some were labeled as bonus clues, but others were not. All were likenesses or names of animals, except for one special bonus clue, The Hunt's unofficial mascot, Barry Manilow, who sang two songs on the back of the radio tape.

Teams were instructed to make their way to Sewall Hall after solving the other puzzles throughout the day. At this location, each team received a hole punch and a ticket with 36 numbered quarter-inch circles. They were also allowed to view a poster of dozens of animals, each numbered. Depending on which clues players remembered, they surmised that they should punch the correspondingly-numbered holes in their ticket.

Teams were then allowed two minutes in the "Mystery Room," which they discovered to contain a Player Harmonica, specially designed and built for The Hunt. When players inserted their ticket in the top, a switch was triggered to activate a motor to feed the ticket through the machine, and another switch to open a the valve to a tank of compressed air. Depending on which holes they had punched, different notes were played on the harmonica as the ticket passed through.

A properly punched card produced the fanfare from the beginning of a horse race, easily recognizable to the average person. But one or more missing or incorrectly placed punches caused the tune to be more difficult to recognize, and produced some quite puzzled looks from teams who chose to create their own interesting patterns on their tickets with the hole punch.

After two minutes in the Player Harmonica Room, teams passed through to a room plastered with lots of strange postcards, each accompanied with the name of a Findivver element. Teams correctly selecting the postcard depicting a horse race had the name of the fifth Snickleberry Juice ingredient - Senterbenter.
